Strange Fish (Thursday 8th October)
Strange Fish
Lesson activity:
- There were three classes containing five individuals (George, Spencer, Megan, Jada and Kellie in the classroom. And our job was to write down what we had to know about weird fish, so we all brainstormed and came up with the following:
Themes:
-Loneliness
-love
-longing
-conflict
-disappointment
-Religion
Synopsis:
-is about couples and couples, but just regular and heterosexual
ones.
-looks at a quest for someone to love and to believe in something.
Scenes:
-The party scene displayed multiple people in couples however there was one single guy that wasn't coupled up. This clearly showed that the guy was outcasted and he was the only person using dialogue during the scene.
- The 'pebble' scene shows the struggle of conflict
-The crucifixion gives away to a coupling/uncoupling and the beginning of the jumping, along with flirtatious behaviour which then ends with Wendy Houstoun standing alone.
-The sex scene might have shown that the men during this was just viewing the women as a object and not a human being that has emotion.
Similarities and differences between 'The Cost Of Living' and 'Strange Fish':
- TCOL= BLUE COLOUR, SF= PURPLE COLOUR
- The mood in each film displayed opposite emotions as TCOL was more upbeat than SF.
- More dialogue in TCOL than SF.
- They explore similar themes especially relationships as both men view the woman has objects. But they displayed it quite differently as SF and more physical theatre than TCOL which involved more dancing and dialogue to show what was occurring in the film.
- We spent more time outside in TCOL but in SF we were mostly indoors. (Some sort of dungeon)
Group Work:
We were given some themes in a previous class lesson, which were disappointment, conflict, love and loneliness, and each group decided which theme we wanted and disappointment was chosen by the mind.
So our influences were from a reality that certain students may experience as it was about how the student continues to struggle in life that it gets to the point that the teachers call a meeting for the parents to come in which ends up making the parents so angry that it results in the father threatening the mother and complaining about how both of them caused a daughter to struggle that it affects her tremendously.
Most of the tools we used were freeze frames that included five distinct ones. The first was to demonstrate the theme of disappointment instantly as the instructor seems terribly worried about the student because they did not meet the teacher's standards, while the other has her hands in the air with the paper where she received the absolute high grade, as the teacher places her hand on her shoulder to tell the audience that the teacher at the same time is very proud and is acknowledging her achievement.
The second freeze frame consisted of a teacher and child-parent meeting discussing how the student works towards the grades that the teacher predicted she will receive, making the parent upset and leaving the teacher without words and choice of how to strengthen it to make the student feel absolutely useless and alone.
When both of their heads were looking down to the floor, the third freeze frame should be more of what the parents thought, which was utter humiliation, as the daughter is slouched over with her elbows put on her knees and her hands on her head telling the audience that she is lost and can not do anything else because she has no support.
The fourth freeze frame is where parents' feelings turn into something physical as the husband becomes aggressive and attacks the wife while the mother's facial expressions are absolute horror while she feels vulnerable and can not fight back to the father as his face is all scrunched up with a look as if he wants to hurt her badly, while the child is left alone in her room listening to this happening and is wondering what to do to prevent them from splitting up.
The final result of the daughters' loss is seen by the fifth freeze frame as the father is completely angry and can't bear to look at her as he looks away from her in utter disgust, and the mother sits sideways away from the daughter on the chair while showing on her facial expressions she feels the fear and vulnerability that the father has caused her and the daughter is on the floor pleading for forgiveness from her parents.
